PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTION OF SOIL & IRRIGATION WATER

PROCEDURE FOR COLLECTION OF SOIL & IRRIGATION WATER SAMPLES FOR ANALYSIS
METHODOLOGY :

After selection of the field randomly 10-15 spots are selected and 'V' Shape hole upto 15 cms. Depth is made with the help of khurpi, spade, soil pipe, auger etc. After that about ½ kg. Soil from both side of 'V' hole may be collected from all spots in a tasla, balti, polythene sheet etc. and dry it well in Shade & mix well thoroughly. After proper mixing divide the

hole part of samples into four parts, remove the front two opposite parts and again mix the two parts thoroughly, divide its four parts, discard two parts. This process should be continued / repeated till the 1/2 kg. Sample left. Now the sample may be filled in a cloth/polythene bags bearing the No. of Samples and the identification of the farmers.

The following Points should be kept in mind before collection of Soil and Water Samples :

If one or two acre fields appears to be homogeneous quality then one representative sample is sufficient, if the field differs from its physical and chemical properties of soil like colour, slope, structure and productivity quality than separate samples from each field may be collected. Sample from the problem soils like Saline and alkaline and also forest and horticulture crops should also be taken separately.

DEPTH OF THE SOIL FROM SAMPLE IS TAKEN : The depth of the soil sampling for cereals and vegetable or sale shallow rooted crops shall be 0-15 cms. for other crops like fruit and trees or deep rooted crops, the depth shall vary from 0-30 cms. - 30-60 cms. And 60-90 cms separately

TOOLS USED FOR SAMPLING : Generally following tools are required for sampling :

1. Khurpi 2. Spade 3. Auger, Dagger 4. Soil pipe 5. Kassi/Belcha etc.

It should be kept in mind that the tools should be helpful making a V Shape hole & should be rust proof.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
Grass, Vegetation & foliage etc.should be removed from the surface soil before taking any sample.

Sample should be taken from the fellow field.

There should be no pit spot of manure etc.

No fertilizer/manuare should be added to the field prior to the sampling.

Field conditions should be dry at the time of sampling.

PROCEDURE FOR WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
The collection of sample is very simple, however tubewell, hand pump whatever it may be should be operated at least two, three hours prior to the collection of samples. Sample container having capacity of about 500 ml. Glass or plastic bottle should be well clean and rinsed through the sample water, the container should also bear the identity of the farmers and his tubewell number if any.
